Long Distance Lessons

Long Distance Lessons

Piping students who do not live within driving distance of London, Ontario can arrange to have private, one on one, lessons with John Cairns via modern technology.

Through experimentation with many types of technology, John has found that he has the greatest success with teaching piping students from all over North America using the telephone (please read some of the testimonials on the main page of this section of the website).

Here is how this type of lesson will work.
  • A long-distance student will call John at the designated date/time on a speaker telephone,
  • John will listen to the student play a piece of music on their bagpipe and he will make an evaluation of their tone, tuning, playing, expression, technique, etc in the same manner he would if the student was face to face, and
  • Once the music has been played, John will ask the student to play the tune again - this time on the practice chanter. John will then be able to communicate with and instruct the student over the speaker on the phone, while they are playing.
Lessons are one hour in length and this medium is an excellent method for teaching those students who want to avail themselves of John’s teaching abilities, but live too far away to come to see him in person.

Unfortunately, as there is no face to face (or visual) interaction, John cannot accept beginner or learner students with this type of lesson. Students who currently play in a street/parade band or those who play at a competition level (grade 5 to the professional level) are welcome.

Note: If you are a beginner student who does not have a local teacher, please contact us we will assist you in finding someone in your area that can instruct you.

All students will be taught using the Bagpipe Solutions by John Cairns curriculum. John Cairns will provide all of the additional reference material or additional music that may be required.

Interested piping students who want to arrange lessons, should contact John directly and provide the following information.
  • Your name,
  • The length of time you have been playing on the practice chanter and bagpipe,
  • Your previous instructors (if any),
  • The competition level you play at (if applicable),
  • The pipe band you play in (if applicable),
  • The time zone that you are in, and
  • An indication of the number of lessons you are looking for each month and the days/times of the week (in your time zone) that you are available to call for your lessons.
Note: As John is regularly away teaching workshops and clinics on weekends, Saturdays and Sundays are not an option for private lessons.

You will then be contacted with pricing information and an indication (based on the availability you have sent him) of the days/times that he could provide lessons.

John has many students all vying for his time. In order to do his best to accommodate every student’s needs, John will ask students to commit to booking lessons in one-month blocks. Scheduling of lessons for a new month will commence by the 2nd week of the previous month.

* Long distance charges will be the responsibility of the student.
