Due to John Cairns’ extensive achievements at the highest levels of piping, as a solo player, piobaireachd player, in a pipe band and as a teacher, he is a unique resource for workshops, seminars, recitals and clinics.
If you are thinking about hiring John to teach a piping or pipe band workshop, seminar or clinic, you will be able to craft (with John’s assistance) a teaching program that meets your specific needs. His level of expertise allows him to teach basically any related subject matter, which will give you the latitude to offer subjects that meet the needs of the students attending.
Below are just a few of the types of workshops, seminars or clinics that we can offer you:
A sample Pipe Band Workshop
- The tonal quality and stability of the band,
- The tuning efficiency of individuals and the band itself,
- The ability for each piper to set up their bagpipe and work with their drone and pipe chanter reeds,
- Pipe band techniques (ie attacks and cut-offs),
- The fluidness of the music you are playing, including offering suggestions for constructing a medley, making the transitions from tune to tune, adding harmonies, etc,
- The unison playing within the pipe section,
- The expression of the pipe music,
- The ensemble within the band itself,
- Etc.
A sample Piobaireachd Seminar
- Offer an introduction to piobaireachd for new players,
- Improve the student’s understanding of piobaireachd itself and how to properly present a tune,
- Improve the student’s ability to play the technical requirements found in the piobaireachd movements,
- Teach new tunes to the students,
- Teach the annual Piobaireachd Society set tunes, and
- Etc.

The length of the workshop, seminar or clinic would need to be negotiated with John directly, as he has two fee schedules:
- One for each day that he travels, and
- One for each day that he is teaching at the workshop, seminar or clinic.
